Basic home searches which don't require any registration - There are litereally hundreds, maybe thousands, of websites that will let you search in total anonymity. They will give you somewhat abbreviated information about many listed properties. You can check out one such service by CLICKING HERE. While you don't have to register to view the properties, you certainly will not see all listed properties, and generally you can't tell whether the home is still available or is currently under contract. But if all you want is a "sampling" of homes, they're still a great way to start. This level would be like picking up a Homes Magazine from your local supermarket ... limited information, but does give you an "idea" of what's out there.
More expansive searches which do you give you a lot more information about available homes in the areas of your choosing - These do require consumers to register because of the increased level of information being provided which is not considered to be "public" information. In northern Illinois, if you're searching for current listing information, you can FIND IT HERE! You'll even be able to tell whether the listings have contracts on them or not. One of the nicest features of this type of service is that you can indicate that you'd like any listings that meet your criteria sent directly to your email "inbox" as soon as they come on the market, or as soon as their price changes so they fall into your desired price range. This would compare to making a call to a local real estate office and describing to the "duty agent" your criteria and asking them to do a quick search for you. Information is more complete, not "publically available", but you would need to "identify" yourself to the agent.
